San Francisco & Oakland Travels | Travel with Chan

For the last week of March and entering into April, I traveled to San Francisco & Oakland!!! Jesse and I were thinking of a mini trip and decided to go to Sunny California. We got a great deal to travel all the way to the west coast for less than $300 (make sure to do research on flights!).

Day 1

The first official day, we were in Oakland and decided to get Dim Sum for breakfast. A local Oakland friend recommended us to try Tao Yuen in Oakland's chinatown. So glad we did because it was delicious! I love that West Coast Dim Sum spots displays the food options.

We then headed to our Airbnb in San Francisco to drop off our stuff before beginning our travels for the day. The great thing about our Airbnb was that if we climbed outside our window, there was the skyline of San Francisco!

On our walk to Fishermen's Wharf,
we found Lombard Street! The super hilly zig zag roads. Then we continued on to our walk to Fishermen's, explored a little in the touristy areas and rented bikes to ride to Golden Gate Bridge!

It gets extremely windy on the ride to Golden Gate Bridge. I would definitely recommend wearing a coat with layers underneath.

Afterwards we returned back to Fishermen's Wharf and tried the infamous In N Out! To be honest, it was quite a disappointment. My fries were cold and stale, burger tasted like a McDonalds burger to me. I guess i had such high expectation for the burger. For the rest of the night we explored around the area and then headed to Oakland to eat with Jesse's older sister.

Day 2

Second day of West Coast traveling! We started our day at Alcatraz Island, an island that was a home to some American criminals. The tour was so fun! We had an audio tour, and there were sound clips of the prisoners describing their life in the island. We explored the prison and the island itself(which is beautiful), it's a shame it was used to lock men away.

Day 3

On the 3rd day, we were in Oakland. Started our day, eating Chinese food in Shandong Restaurant . We got the infamous Meat Sauce hand pulled noodle, spicy wonton, and beef fried rice. The meal was delicious, especially with some hot chilli sauce they had.

Afterwards, we went hopped back on the BART to San Francisco and explored the city more. We didn't have an agenda so we just kept walking and ending in a precarious neighborhood. At night, we ate Ethiopian food with Jeff and Jesse's older sister. The food was sooo good! The sour bread mixed well with all the copious amount of toppings.

Day 4

The start of our fourth day in the West Coast, we crashed the Oakland Marathon! We ran 5k, and got some free snacks afterwards. What a great way to explore Oakland and to start the morning.

After the race, we rewarded ourselves with brunch at Sweet Maple. And whoa(!!) the Million dollar Bacon, is HEAVEN. It's extra thick, glazed with maple, and slowly cooked for hours. So much flavor in each bite.

Then later we landed in Dolores Park. It's a small park compared to Central Park or even to Prospect Park, but one unique aspect is, it is populated with people. Everyone is just laying down and enjoying their Sunday. There was also the mythical Coconut man, who sells coconut water with rum and the Truffle man, that sells... truffle.. We found both of them!

Day 5

The last day in SF and Oakland!! Today was dedicated for Muir Woods. The area is filled with some of the tallest trees in the country, and you are surrounded by the redwood trees.

To refuel our energy from our hike, we drove to get some burgers. At first, we were going to give In N Out a second chance, but we landed on another burger spot. Super Duper burger, hands down, the BEST burger i've had all of 2017. It was so juicy and flavorful, even the ketchup was full of freshness. I was really tempted to buy another burger and bring it back with me to NYC. Afterwards, we explored Berkeley the university and also the neighborhood. For dinner, we had Burma Superstar, a 4 star restaurant with over 5,000 reviews!! It was my first time having Burmese food. With all the good reviews, I had high expectations. When i took my first bite to the rainbow salad, magical!! So much texture in a salad. Every dish was delicious. That was a great last dinner in San Francisco.

After the dinner, we packed our bags to head home back to the big apple! Sf & Oakland was a great first trip as a couple for Jesse and I. We explored the bpth cities, walked so much and also indulged in a lot of west coast bites.
